Writing
To begin our Earth theme, we first asked our students to write about the current problems they think we have when it comes to the environment. From trees disappearing to turtles affected by garbage in the water, we realized our students were more aware about things that were going on around them.
Response to Reading
After reading stories, we encourage our students to go beyond what they read by connecting it to their own life experiences. Other times, we ask them to use their imaginations and recreate their own worlds or make their own stories using toys and materials we have. Our students have recreated theme parks, written about their trips, made their own houses for animals in the stories they made up, and even tried Origami after reading about it in a story.
Essay Writing
Our essay writing program has given us a glimpse of the inner world of our students. Our first step is always to get them into the habit of writing anything and everything down. Once we have that, they learn to do various forms of writing (information writing, opinion/argument writing, and narrative writing) to help them perform better in school.
